Around Zakynthos Island
Alikes
Alikes and it's neighbour, the more traditional village of Alykanas are two popular beaches on the north east coast of Zakynthos about 20km from Zakynthos town. The resorts comprise of two excellent sandy beach's that are about 3-4 kilometres long. Both resorts have a number of restaurants, bars and tavernas that come alive in the high season.You will also find many different kinds of water sports during the high season. During the low season both resorts are fairly low key and relaxing. From Alykes you can visit the shipwreck beach ( Navagio) and the caves of Cape Schinari.
Argassi
About 4 km outside of Zakynthos Town Argassi the resort is centred around a long narrow sand and shingle beach with a number of different little coves in the area. The resort is still being developed and is becoming increasingly popular for it's beach and night life. A large variety of water sports can be found here as well as sun beds and umbrellas that can be rented .
Argassi is one of most populated resorts on the island, the little marina at one end of the beach adds to the attraction of the resort. It has a large number of shops, restaurants and bars that attract the younger tourist. Better beaches can be found towards vassilikos.
Vassilikos
The area known as Vassilikos is a beautiful part of Zakynthos famous for it's country side, beach resorts and the little villages that are dotted around the area. The area is also famous for the Caretta turtles that use this stretch of coast line to lay it's eggs in the warm sand, this comes under the protection of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.
Aghios Nikolaos
Aghios Nikolasos is a large sandy beach with plenty of water sports on the southeast coast of Zakynthos within the Vassilikos area. The resort is well known for it's water sports and scuba diving. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired and there are restaurant facilities on this beach.
Gerakas
Gerakas is a long sandy beach near Laganas, famous for the turtles that lay their eggs in the soft white sand.
The area comes within the National Marine park that protects the wildlife in the area. For this reason the beach is fairly quite and keeps much of it's original charm and beauty. Restaurants and bars can be found near by but it is advisable to take your own refreshments when visiting this beach.
Marathias
Not that easy to get to but well worth the effort. Marathias beach is a small shingle beach about 20 km from Zakynthos Town. With crystal clear water and very quite this little beach is a must for those who want to get away from the more crowded beaches.
Bouka
Bouka is located close to Tsilivi in Tragaki, the beach is quite small but it has soft sand and shallow clear waters ideal for the family. The traditional little fishing harbour at Bouka and the small sandy beach all add up to a resort that has maintained much of it's character and charm. It is ideal for those who want to get away from the more developed and crowded beaches near by.
Laganas
Laganas is one of the main tourist resorts of the island, however, it can be quite noisy and seems to attract the younger tourist for it's lively night life. The long sandy beach (about 10km long) stretches around the bay and is lined with hotels, tavernas, restaurants, bars and night clubs. The beach is ideal for families with soft white sand, gently shelving beach and warm waters but it is quite regimented with it's sun beds and umbrellas. If you take the trouble to walk away from the resort centre you will find quieter stretches of beach but beware some parts of the beach need to be avoided because the endangered turtles that lay their eggs here.
Krioneri
This beach is safe and recommended for families. The beach is sandy and very clean, it is the ideal beach to relax on.
Kalamaki
Kalamaki, is a fine sandy beach with crystal clear waters and is an extension to the beach at Laganas. the resort is very popular and can become quite crowded, however, quieter spots can be found. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired and there are plenty of restaurants and bars for the tourist trade.
Parts of the beach are used by the turtles to lay their eggs and need to be avoided.
Dafni
Another beach close to Laganas Bay that is used by the turtles and should be avoided if possible. Reports do suggest that this beach has been spoilt by un-necessary buildings and is not one of the beaches to visit.
Marathonisi
This is a beautiful little beach with sand and shingle can only be reached by boat but again it it used by the turtles and should be avoided.
Sekania
Just north of Laganas bay this beach is a mixture of sand and pebbles. This beach does have turtles during July and August and should be avoided if possible.
Shipwreck Beach
Shipwreck beach or Bay is probably one of the most photographed locations in the whole of the Greek islands. The beautiful bay known as Navagio captures your imagination. This beach is only accessible by boat, the wreck was "beached" about 20 years ago and the elements have slowly caused it to deteriate.
Tsilivi
Tourists are attracted to Tsilivi for it's pleasant countryside and beautiful beach that is ideal for families. The beach is soft white sand and a gently shelving beach with clear warm waters. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired here. Water sports can be found here for the more adventurous or if it's a quiet beach you are looking for, a 5 minute walk along the beach and you will find your quiet spot.
Restaurants and bars cater for the tourists who like to eat out in the evenings and just relax and soak up the atmosphere.
Poto Zoro / Porta Roma
These beaches are just two of a number of little beaches that can be found just off the beaten track along the southeast coast of Zakynthos not far from Agrassi.
Keri
Keri is a small village about 20km from Zakynthos Town. The resort of Limni Keriou has a great little stony beach and small harbour at one end. The resort has a lighthouse and is well worth a visit just for the views. From the resort it is possible to visit the blue caves of Marathia. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired on the beach. For the more adventurous you can hire boats and explore the coast line around this area. One such beach is the sandy beach of
Marathonissi.
Keri does come under Laganas Bay and under the protection of the National Marine Park to protect the Caretta turtles. Keri is considered the island centre for scuba diving.
