About Symi

Symi is a small but historic Greek island. Geographically, it is part of the Dodecanese island chain, located about 41 km from Rhodes and has an area of 57 km2. The island is very mountainous and has an interior that is dotted with small valleys, and its coastline alternates between rocky cliffs and sandy coves. Its main town, located on the north east coast, is also named Simi, and the island has around 2,500 inhabitants, mostly engaged in fishing, trade, and tourism. In addition to its many historical sites, the island's isolated beaches—many reachable only with small boats—are popular with tourists.

Around Symi Island

Gialos & Chorio

Gialos is the main port on the small island of Symi. The port and the town of Chorio is perched above the harbour area is a busy bustling town many of the visitors being day visitors from the neighbouring islands.

The Museum in the harbour area is well worth a visit and the Cathedral of Timios Prodromas.

The old town of Chorio is also well worth the climb with its neatly packed in houses and little streets.

Agios Nikolaos

A very sheltered sand and shingle beach which is very popular with families. The gentle shelving clear waters and the ready made sun shades of the trees that line the beach are ideal for the younger tourists. There are beach umbrellas and sun beds available as well as the shade given by the trees.

The beach can be reached by water taxi from Symi or Pedi and the small taverna at the back of the beach can supply that cool drink during the heat of the day.

Try snorkeling, the rocky outcrops are ideal.

Agios Vasilios

This beach is mainly shingle and some sand, it is quite a walk from the road so the water taxi is once again the favourite mode of transport to this beach. Some shade is available at the back of the beach by the few trees that line the back of the beach. The beach is not organised so you will need to take your own umbrella, water and food.

Nanou

The best way to reach Nanou is by water taxi. This beach is a quiet beach probably due to its location and the larger pebbles that are found on this beach. The crystal clear water makes this beach ideal for snorkeling.

Sun beds and umbrellas are for hire and a small taverna is at hand for drinks and food.

St. George's Bay.

Towering cliff faces are just part of the stunning scenery that make this beach one of most picturesque beaches on the island. Again the beach is only reachable by water taxi from Symi harbour.
There are no facilities on this beach so you will need to go prepared with a umbrella and drinks.

Agia Marina

What a beautiful setting this bay is. Located on the northern side of the island the crystal clear waters that are ideal for snorkeling and the white-washed houses make this resort an ideal location.

Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired, small tavernas and bars are available for drinks and food. The location and the gently shelving beach make this an ideal location for families.

The sun beds are laid out on a concrete walk way next to the taverna.

Nimborios

Nimborios was originally a fishing village but like most villages has succumbed to the tourist trade. There is not a great deal in this resort so it has changed and for this reason it has not lost much of its original charm.

There are sun beds and umbrellas for hire on the thin strip of pebble beach and a taverna at the back of the beach is available for drinks and food.

Pedi Bay

A delightful little bay, formally a fishing village , very picturesque and not yet over developed. Like many of the smaller beaches they are reached by bus, car, taxi or by taking a water taxis from Gialos town.

A number of small tavernas can be found along the road at the back of the beach. Sun beds and umbrellas can also be hired on the beach.

Nos beach

This thin strip of sand and shingle beach that can get very crowded and is just one of a number of small beaches to be found in the main town.

The taverna on this beach reaches right down to the waters edge and can get quite busy.

Marathounda

This beach is very basic but will appeal to the tourist who likes to have peace and quiet. Sun beds and umbrellas are available on this stone and shingle beach. If you are looking for a beach where you can snorkel, this beach is ideal. There is a taverna here that serves drinks and food.
