About Skyros

Skyros is the southern most island of the Sporades, a Greek archipelago in the Aegean Sea. The island has an area of 209 km2 and is the largest of the Sporades, the island has a population of about 3000 (in 2003).

The north of the island is covered by forest, and includes the island's highest point, Mount Olympos (903 metres), while the south, dominated by the mountain of Kochila, is bare and rocky. The island's capital is also called Skyros. The main port, on the west coast, is Linaria.

The island has a castle that dates from the Venetian occupation (13th to 15th centuries), a Byzantine monastery (Saint George of Skyros), the grave of English poet Rupert Brooke at Tris Boukes harbour, and the Bronze Age archaeological site of Palamari.

There are many beaches on the coast.
Skyros can be reached by ferry from Skiathos or Evia.

Kastro is a Byzantine fortress or castle that is on site of the ancient acropolis built in the 5th century BC. Two museums in Skyros town of note are the Archaeological Museum and the Faltaitz Museum, the later being founded by the artist Manos Faltaitz and has a wonderful collection of photographs.

The only problem is getting to the beach. The best way is by boat but you can get to it if you are prepared for a hike in the hot sun.

Magazia

Magazia beach SkyrosMagazia beach is just north of Skiros town between the villages of Magazia and Molos. The beach is a long grey sandy beach but the area is still being developed and is likely to get more and more crowded due to its location. Water sports abound on this beach, if you do not mind the crowds this beach has a lot to offer.
