About SkopelosSkopelos is situated in a province which is better known as the Northern Sporades and a municipality in the central part of the Sporades and the north eastern part of the island. The port of Skiathos which is located in the north eastern part near the centre of Skiathos serves the towns of Volos, Skiathos and Alonissos. The nearest islands to Skopelos are Skiathos to the west and Alonissos to the east. It is located east of mainland Greece and Magnesia and north east of Euboea. The island was known as Peparethos. Skopelos has one main road which leads to three villages in the western part of the island. Skopelos is the greenest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Because the island of Skopelos is defined by lush green forest and the blue of the sea the International Organization of Biopolitics, on July the 5th 1997, officially proclaimed it "Green and Blue Island" Similarly the town of Skopelos, by presidential decree, (19/10/1978 Presidential Decree 594,13-11/78). was honoured as a Traditional Settlement of outstanding beauty. (The Greek equivalent of a site of Outstanding Architectural Inheritance). Also known for the amazing colour of the sea and the beaches. The geography of Skopelos includes a mountaintop to the northwest and bushy and rocky hills around Skopelos. Most of the villages are to the west. Agriculture is also common, mainly mixed farming and vineyards, the main products are wine and plumbs. Fishing is also common on the island. Tourism is, however, the main industry. The municipality is encircled by the Aegean Sea. |
