About Skopelos

Skopelos is situated in a province which is better known as the Northern Sporades and a municipality in the central part of the Sporades and the north eastern part of the island. The port of Skiathos which is located in the north eastern part near the centre of Skiathos serves the towns of Volos, Skiathos and Alonissos.

The nearest islands to Skopelos are Skiathos to the west and Alonissos to the east. It is located east of mainland Greece and Magnesia and north east of Euboea. The island was known as Peparethos. Skopelos has one main road which leads to three villages in the western part of the island.

Skopelos is the greenest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Because the island of Skopelos is defined by lush green forest and the blue of the sea the International Organization of Biopolitics, on July the 5th 1997, officially proclaimed it "Green and Blue Island"

Similarly the town of Skopelos, by presidential decree, (19/10/1978 Presidential Decree 594,13-11/78). was honoured as a Traditional Settlement of outstanding beauty. (The Greek equivalent of a site of Outstanding Architectural Inheritance).

Also known for the amazing colour of the sea and the beaches.

The geography of Skopelos includes a mountaintop to the northwest and bushy and rocky hills around Skopelos. Most of the villages are to the west. Agriculture is also common, mainly mixed farming and vineyards, the main products are wine and plumbs. Fishing is also common on the island. Tourism is, however, the main industry. The municipality is encircled by the Aegean Sea.

Around Skopelos Island

Skopelos Town

Whether you arrive from Skiathos, Volos, Kymi, Ayios or Konsta-ntines the view as you approach the port of Skopelos via it's natural harbour is stunning. The numerous small white washed houses with their terracotta traditional roof make the town one of the most picturesque in the whole of Greece.

As you approach your destination you can start to see the contrast with the old and new parts of the town. The old part of the town to the right is set on the side of a steep hill. The town has very narrow streets, with small tiny houses and numerous churches. The streets are very colourful with pot plants and shady courtyards all leading you onwards towards the top of the village. Perched on the top most part of the village you are rewarded with fantastic views from a small taverna.

Slopelos_old_town_Greek_IslandsAs you wind your up to the top try counting the number of churches you past. various stories are told as to why the locals built so many churches, I favour the story that the locals put all their wealth into these churches when ever they were attacked by pirates who would not enter the church.

The other side of the town has numerous shops and restaurants in contrast with the old quarter.

Stafylos

Stafylos_Skopelos_Greek_IslandsOne of the nearest beaches to Skopelos Town Stafyos or Staphlos is one of the locals favourite beaches. The beach is very sheltered and sandy horse shoe shaped bay with a rocky out crop that is ideal for snorkeling. The rocky out crop at the southern end of the beach hides another pretty little beach called Valanio. This area is steeped in history and well worth looking into if ancient history interests you.

Agnondas

Agnondas_Skopelos_Greek_IslandsThe small very picturesque harbour and small beach at Agondas is well worth a visit. The little fish restaurants here have a good reputation. Other beaches can also be visited by boat from this harbour.

Panormas

Panormas_Skopelos_Greek_IslandsThe twin bays at Panormos offer shelter to many boats and the view as you enter the bay is quite breath taking, green pine trees reach right down to the blue sea making a magnificent contrast. There are a few restaurants and hotels in this resort but it is quiet and ideal for that away from it all holiday. The beach is made up of stones and course sand.

Limonari

Limonari_Skopelos_Greek_IslandsThis beach is not that easy to get too, the best way to get to it is by boat. It's a secluded little bay with pine trees right down to the beach. The beach itself is is quite rocky and you do need to be careful when entering the water.

Milia

Milia_Skopelos_Greek_IslandsOne of the best and busiest beaches on the island, a long stretch of beach with fantastic scenery including the small island of Dassia.

Elios

Elios_Skopelos_Greek_IslandsElios is a very modern resort almost purpose built for tourists. The long sandy beach cut in half by a purpose built breakwater is not that picturesque but it is a good base to explore the rest of the island from. A plus for this area is that there are very pretty little villages in this area.
