Around Rhodes Island
Rhodes Town
Archaeological sites abound in this clash of historic and modern developments. If you want something more than just beaches Rhodes is for you. The old city with its spectacular walls and the many monuments to the cultural history of the island combine to add to the charm and beauty of this exceptional island.
The modern side of Rhodes Town may not be to every ones taste but some of the areas are worth taking the trouble to wonder through and check out the conflicting types of architecture that has developed in these areas over time.
Of course there is the usual abundance of restaurants, cafes, bars and tourists shops that have inevitably grown with the resort as the tourist industry has developed.
Faliraki
All the main tourist islands have one, a resort where the younger tourists have taken over. The clubs, bars and restaurants are all geared up to give you a party atmosphere that can be a little over powering to those of us who are not looking for party scene. Having said that if you want to party every night this is the resort to visit.
Well worth a visit is the Faliraki water park, the youngsters and the young at heart will enjoy this experience.
Agathi
One of the best beaches on the island with fine sand and crystal clear water. The beach shelves slowly making it ideal for families. Facilities on the beach are limited to sun beds shades and a few restaurants where you can by lunch and drinks during the day.
Tsambiki
This beach is not that easy to get to due to the steep descent to the resort, however it is quite a popular destination for many tourists. It can be reached by car and the car park is just behind the beach.
Regimented sun beds and sun shades line the beach which has lovely soft white sand. Due to the location make do tavernas have started to materialise where you can get drinks and take away foods.
Afondou
If you like piece and quite on the beach this is the resort for you. The stone and shingle beach has little to offer other than piece and quite. What it does not have on the beach it makes up for off the beach, numerous tavernas and bars line the main road and it also boasts of a golf course near by.
Kolimbia
The resort said to be one of the most picturesque on the island and has not over grown itself. The beach is shingle with all the usual amenities that you would expect. Other bays can reached from this resort by using local transport or water taxis.
Haraki
A long curving shingle beach with all the facilities that you may expect. The resort is dominated by the ruins of Feraklos castle. As you would expect with a resort that has many apartments they need to cater for the tourist and many restaurants nd bars have grown up with the resort.
Stegna
Just outside the town of Arhangelos on the west coast of the island is the beach of Stegna. The beach is amongst some of the loveliest scenery on the island. Many small sandy coves can be reached along this stretch of the coast and Stagna is one of the best. The resort grew up from a small harbour at one end of the bay and is now favoured by water taxis so the beach does get quite busy at times. Tavernas and bars line the beach front to give tourists a chance to have a cool beer and some shade.
Lindos
A beautiful horse shoe bay of fine white sand and crystal clear water make Lindos one of the best and probably the most popular beach on the island.
The familiar pictures of Lindos with the white washed square buildings still exists but underneath in the height of the tourist season the area does get stretched to the limit. The old walls of the Crusader fortress encompassing the Acropolis is still impressive and worth viewing if you can cope with the hustle and bustle of the tourists who seem to arrive from all over the island.
Do not be put off by the crowds though, a visit to Rhodes would not be the same without a visit to Lindos.
St Pauls Bay
Not far from Lindos the beach at St Pauls, it is a very narrow strip of white sand that gently curves around the bay. The beach has beautiful sand and clear water, sun beds and shades seem to be regimented like so many of the beaches where they are available for hire. This beach does draw in the tourist boats so it can get a little too crowded at times.
Pefkos
Pefkos seems to have been developed for the British tourist who is not too concerned about “going Greek”. The resort does tend to cater for the tourist who wants to eat British while in Greece. This is not to say that Greek food can’t be found you just need to look a little harder for it.
The coast line offers many small coves to explore and rocky outcrops that are ideal for families. The beach at Pefkos is predominantly shingle with some sand. The usual facilities are available on this beach.
Glystra
For a much quieter beach why not try Glystra its only a small cove and the facilities are are not very good but if you want to get away from the crowds this beach may suit you.
Kiotari
This beach seems to get the overspill from some of the near by larger resorts. The beach is sand and shingle and does have water sports facilities on the beach. A number of tavernas are available to offer lunch and cool drinks during the heat of the day.
Plimri
Like many of the beaches along the south coast of the island the facilities are far and few between, but if your prepared to take your own lunch and brolly you can escape the crowds and find peace and quite. Plimi is predominantly sand and has many dunes at the back of the beach to shelter from the wind
Prassonisi
On the southern tip of the island is Prassonisi, this beach can be quite windy and is favourite for the wind surfers. The beach is famous for the sand bank that juts out into the sea.
