About Naxos

Naxos, at 428 km2 is the largest island in the Cyclades group situated in the Aegean Sea. The island was the centre of archaic Cycladic culture, then part of classical Greek culture and is part of Greece today.

It is a popular tourist destination, with easily accessible ruins. One set of ruins is all that is left of a temple built on a rocky beach. An earthquake distroyed the temple, sending most of ot into the sea and leaving two columns with a single lintel across them. The remains of the structure resting in the sea can be seen from the shore and explored by swimmers.

Naxos has many very beautiful beaches, like the ones at Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, Alikos, Castraki, Mikri Vigla, Plaka and Agios Georgios at Hora, which is the capital of the island.

Naxos is famous as the most fertile island of the Cyclades. It has a good supply of water, in an area where water is usually inadequate. Mount Zas at 1004 meters is the highest peak in the Aegean Sea, and it tends to trap the clouds, permitting greater rainfall.

Around Naxos Island

Agios Georgios

This beach is in the town of Naxos and is ideal for families. The beach is very popular and very well organised with sun beds and most water sports to keep you active, it also has numerous tavernas and beach bars.

Agios Prokopios

Agios Prokopios is one of the best beaches on the island, soft golden sand and crystal clear water, this beach is well worth a visit. Small tavernas can be found on this beach offering cool drinks and food.

A beach of two halves, one half organised and the other is much quieter and unspoilt with beautiful sand dunes at the back of the beach.

Maragas

A beautiful wide beach with soft white sand and clear water. This beach can get a little crowded in the high season but has all the characteristics of the other naxos beaches except the sand dunes.

Agia Anna

Agia Anna is just one of several little beaches all close together. The beach is soft white sand, you can get sun beds and umbrellas on parts of the beach. The location is quite built up with hotels and apartments, tavernas and restaurants and one or two night clubs. This beach is ideal for families due to the shallow water.

Mikri Vigla

Mikri Vigla has two beaches split by a headland. The northern beach is not so sheltered as the other beach, which is ideal for families. Both beaches have soft white sand and beautiful clear waters. Restaurants and tavernas can be found in Mikri Viagla.

Kastraki

Kastraki beach is made up of a number of little sandy coves with a rocky outlet at one end. The beach never seems to get too crowded, probably because the area is not that built up. Trees reach right down to the beach in places offering shade at certain times of the day. A number of local bars and restaurants can be found at the back of the beach.

Plaka

Plaka joins with Agia Anna and is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, a long stretch of soft white sand and crystal clear water. The area is still yet to be taken over by mass tourism and remains one of the best kept secrets of the Greek Islands. There are a number of sunbeds and umbrellas to be had but there is still plenty of room on this beach for the tourist who like to spread out and enjoy the quite life and beautiful scenery.

You will find some water sports on this beach and there are a few small tavernas behind the sand dunes.

Alyko

A beautiful long sandy beach fringed by trees and sand dunes. You need to be prepared to walk a little to find secluded bays not far from the main beach.

Pyrgaki

If your looking for a quite beach this is the beach for you. Located at the southern end of the island the wide sandy beach is just about as good as it gets. The beach does have it’s own beach bar located right at the back of the beach.

Moutsouna

This very pretty little sandy beach was formally a small harbour but like most resorts on the island has succumbed to tourism and has developed into quite a busy little resort. The beach is very quiet and not organised but there are a number of tavernas by the beach that are well worth a visit. You will need transport to visit this village and the local beach and the roads are not too bad.

Psili Amos

Psili Ammos is not that easy to get to and for this reason is very quiet. If you like to get away from it all this beach is for you. The beach is located near the village of Kanaki.

Panormas

Panormos is a quiet beach located in the southeast of the island. This beach is another beach to visit if you like to be alone and not share with hundreds of other tourists.

Kleidos

This beach has been left and remains one of the prettiest beaches on the island. The stone and shingle beach is probably just as it was before the tourists started to come to the island.

Lionas

Again a very quiet beach with some fantastic views. This beach is located near the village of Koronos. Be prepared though this beach is not organised.
