About Lefkas

Lefkada, or Lefkas is a Greek Island in the Ionian Sea, connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. The city of Lefkada, is at the north of the island, approximately 20 minutes by car away from Preveza Airport.

Lefkada Town has a population of about 10,000.
The east coast section of the island has the small resorts of Lefkada, Nikiana and Periqiali, all north of the largest resort on the island - Nidri. It is set in a sheltered location with views across to Skorpios - owned by Aristotle Onassis, Meganissi and other small islands, as well as the Greek mainland. The main coastal road from Lefkada to Vasiliki runs through the town, although a bypass is being built. There are regular car ferries to Kefalonia, Ithaca and Meganissi.
20km south of Nidri is the resort of Vasiliki – this area is known for it’s windsurfing centre. There are ferries here to Kefalonia and Ithaca from here.
South of Vasiliki is Cape of Lefkatas, where renowned Greek female poet Sappho allegedly leapt to her death from the 100 foot (30m) high cliffs.

There are spectacular views across to Ithaca and Kefalonia, however the 16km (10 mile) unpaved road is enough to put off all but the most determined.

The West coast, facing the great expanse of the Medierranean, has the hyped beach of Porto Katsiki. To the North, there are numerous beaches, with pale golden sand and powerful waves - a sharp contrast to the more popular East Coast.

Around Lefkas Island

Kavos Beach

Kavos is a very picturesque beach, quite a well organised beach with sun beds and shades and an ideal family beach.

Milos Beach

Milos beach is not that easy to get to, the best way is by boat. A stony beach that consists mainly of small pebbles and has fantastic scenery and crystal clear water ideal for snorkelling. Due to the location there are no tavernas on this beach so you will need to go there prepared with your own refreshments. Some reports say that a new taverna is planned to be established closer to the beach.

Porto Katsiki

Porto KatsikiPorto Kaisiki is a beautiful sandy beach located in the south west of the island and probably one of the best beaches on the island. The beach accessible by steps that lead down to the beach. It is advisable to take your own refreshments although there is a shop where food and drink can be purchased before you descend to the beach. The only drawback to this beach is that it is not the best beach for snorkelling.

Agiofili

Agiofili beach is located near Vassilki, it is a small stony beach with crystal clear water just right for snorkelling. This beach comes highly recommended but you will need to take your own lunch, there are no facilities on this beach.

Agios Ioannis

Agios Ioannis and Myloi is two beaches in one. The beach has two distinct characters with wind surfers at one end of the beach while at the other towards Agios Ioannis it is much quieter and more relaxing.

Agios Nikitas

Agios Nikitas beach is a small beach located near the village of Ag. Nikitas. This beach does tend to get a little crowded in the summer due to the proximity of the local hotels. Other beaches in this area are Mylos, Pefkoulia and Kathisma.

Desimi

This beach has large pebbles that do make it difficult to access.

Egremni of Egremnoi

A long stony beach that is difficult to access but well worth the effort. You will need to leave your car in one of the man made car parks at the top and take the sometimes precarious walk down to the beach. Surprisingly there are some facilities near the beach but I would recommend that you take your own lunch just in case the facilities are not available. Due to the accessibility of the beach and the size the beach does not get to crowded and you will always find a quite spot. The only drawback is the thought that you need to climb back up to the car after a long lazy day on the beach.

Gyra

This long sandy beach is just outside the town of Lefkas, it has most facilities and can get quite crowded but if you are prepared to walk along the beach you will find quieter stretches of beach that are not so crowded. Tavernas are located at certain areas along the beach where you can leave the beach for lunch or just a cool beer.

Kathisma

This is a small stony beach that is very popular and tends to get quite crowded. Facilities are available but parking can be a problem. The area is quite busy with many hotels and apartments springing up on a regular basis. This beach does tend to attract the younger tourist so be prepared for loud music and bar megaphones.

Mikros Gialos

This beach is recognised as one of the better snorkelling beaches on the island. The drawback is the beach consists mainly of large pebbles that seem to make walking difficult without shoes.

Pefkoulia

If your looking for a camping site on the island this beach is quite close to a camp site. The beach has small pebbles and is situated near Agios Nikitas.

Porto Katsiki

A beautiful sandy beach that can get very crowded and can be a nightmare to get to and away from. In the high season the beach will get too crowded and can become very noisy.

Vasiliki

This beach is ideal for wind surfing and most days large numbers of surfers seem to descend on this beach. The beach itself is large pebbles that make walking on the beach difficult.
