About Kos

Kos or Cos is a Greek Island of the Dodecanese group of islands, in the Aegean Sea, which it separates from the Gulf of Cos. It measures 40 km by 8 km. The island has both fertile plains and infertile highlands. The population of Kos is approx: 30,500.

The island boasts long sandy beaches with large hotels and secluded villages, leading to its main industry being tourism. Farming is the principal occupation of many of the island's inhabitants, with their main crops being grapes, almonds, figs, olives, tomatoes and lettuce, along with wheat and corn.

Tree of HippocratesThe main port and population centre on the island, also called Kos, is also the tourist and cultural centre, with whitewashed buildings including many hotels, restaurants and a small number of nightclubs. The town has a 14th century fortress at the entrance to its harbour. The ancient physician Hippocrates is thought to have been born on Kos, and in the centre of the town is the Plane Tree of Hippocrates where the physician is traditionally supposed to have taught. The limbs of the now elderly tree are supported by scaffolding.

The main villages of Kos island are Kardamena, Kefalos, Tingaki, Antimachia, Mastihari, Marmari and Pyli. Smaller ones are Zia, Zipari, Platani, Lagoudi and Asfendiou.

Around Kos Island

Kardamena Beach

KardamenaOn of the main tourist resorts of Kos, Kardamena has plenty to offer. If your looking for lively night life and not to bothered about going Greek than this is the resort for you. On the other hand if your looking for a quite holiday where the height of excitement is when the “doughnut man” visits, my advice is to find a quieter resort.

The resort is situated on the west coast of Kos with the usual high standard of beach, beautiful white sand and crystal clear water, with an a great number of facilities available on the beach.

Tingaki

TingakiTingaki lies on the north east coast of Kos with good roads to the island capital town of Kos which is about 10 kilometres away. The beach can get quite crowded in the resort centre but if you are prepared to walk away from the centre you will find the beach can be very quite, it is about 10 kilometres long. The only drawback to this , is that the further you go the less facilities are available. The beach has lovely white soft sand and the water is quite shallow and is perhaps one of the best beaches on the island, however, be prepared, the wind can blow on this beach.

The resort has a fair number of restaurants, bars and cafes, to cater for the lunch time trade and the self catering trade in the evenings.

Marmari

MarmariSouth of Tingaki on the east coast is Marmari, this is a continuation of the beach at Tingaki but a much wider beach with sand dunes and very shallow waters. This resort is not far from Pyli which is just inland from Marmari and can provide some where to explore if you need a break from the beach. The resort has all the normal beach facilities available and a number of restaurants and cafes ready to invite you in for lunch or evening meal.

Lambi

This is one of Kos Town’s local beaches, it lies just outside Kos Town and is quite easy to get to. The beach has fine white sand and has shallow water making it ideal for families. Unfortunately it does come over as very “organised” with all the usual beach facilities.

kefalos

Kefalos>Kefalos is a more traditional resort, it's quiet and more relaxed than most resorts. The bay is a huge horse shoe and the island in the middle splits the bay, the church of Aghios Nicholas can be seen on this island. The beach is gently shelving and consists of sand and shingle, ideal for families. Water sports are available on this beach.

Nightlife is fairly low key with restaurants and bars, two discos are available for the more adventurous.

Psalidi

PsalidiPsilidi beach is next to Kos Town. The resort is considered to be Kos Towns quite neighbour being more laid and back and relaxing. The beach consists of sand and shingle and and probably not one of the better beaches on the island.

Mastichari

The resort has been developed from a fishing port and is quieter and more relaxed than its neighbour kardamainia. You can get a bout from here to to the islands of Psermos and Kalymnos.

Pserimos

Perserimos IslandThe island of Pserimos is is well worth a visit, there are a few beaches mainly shingle but the main beach is soft sand. Day trips can be had to the island.
