About Ios

Ios is an island in the group of islands known as the Cyclades situated in the Aegean Sea and part of Greece.
Ios is a hilly island with cliffs that reach down to the sea on most sides, the island is situated halfway between Poros and Santorini. The island is about 18 km long, and 10 km wide, with an area of about 105 sq km. The population was 1,100 in 1992 surprisingly lower than in the 19th century when the population was reported to be about 3,500.
The main town is Ios, at the head of the Ormos harbour in the northwest. From there the bus or a 15-minute-walk up the donkey path takes you to the village. This is a white and very picturesque village, full of stairs and narrow walks, that makes it inaccessible for cars of any kind. Today, the main path through this village is completely taken over by tourism in terms of restaurants, boutiques, bars and discotheques. Apart from the port and the village, Ios has only a few small settlements, just a group of spread out houses in the background of the major beaches such as Theodoti, Kalamos and Manganari. Since the 1990s the island worked to attract a variety of tourists including trying to attract tourists with money from the European community. Work has also improved the roads and facilities.
Ios has left little impression on history. Ancient tradition said that Homer’s mother was from Ios, and that he himself was buried there, and indeed the locals will show visitors the site of the ancient town of Plakatos at the northernmost end of the island, where the rocky entrance to a tomb may be seen. There is no physical evidence connecting this with Homer however. There are signs of a Mycenaean settlement.
The north end of Ios also has a ruined Venetian castle from the 15th century and the island is said to have 150 churches and chapels.
One of the most popular beaches is Milopotamos or Milopota.T

Around Ios Island

Koumbara

The Koumbara area is a mixture of small sandy coves and rocky outcrops that are ideal for snorkeling. If your looking for an away from it all day this area is for you. Due to the location and the quiet beaches this area is much favoured by nudists. The beach of Koumbara is a wide stretch of golden sand and is reachable by the local bus. The location is between Ormas and Diakopto.

Plakatos

Plakatos is located just north of "Homer's Tomb".

Agia Theodoti

A long wide sandy bay with gently shelving hills down to the beach make this beach an ideal sheltered resort. A number of tavernas close by offer a very good selection of meals and drinks. Perched high on the hills is the ancient fort of Paliokastro.

Kalamos

The beautiful sand and shingle beach of Kalamos with its clear waters is ideal for the tourists who like to combine a spot of walking while visiting the beach. If your prepared to walk a way you will find a number of small secluded coves along this stretch of coast line. The resort also offers great snorkeling amongst the rocky outcrops.

Psathi

The resort offers two beaches both with a wide expanse of soft white sand and then almost shingle in places. The water is quite deep and can get quite rough at times due to the locality. Wind surfers tend to make the most of the winds and very often descend on the beach in large numbers. The beach being open and the coarse sand tend to keep the beach low key. The sea does get quite deep quickly in places so you do need to be a little careful otherwise the beach and the surrounding resort is worth a visit.

Manganari

The coast along this part of the island offers fantastic little sandy coves ideal for the naturests amongst us. You will also find numerous tavernas and bars along this stretch of coast line. The only drawback is this area is very popular and some of the more organised beaches do get a little crowded so be prepared to walk a little if you are looking for something a little bit quieter.

Plakes

This beach is near Kalamos and is absolutely superb, soft sand , crystal clear water and beautiful scenery.

Yialos

Located near the port of Ormas Yialos is a lovely little beach made up of soft white sand and crystal clear water. There are tavernas and bars around the beach and all types of water sports are available on the beach.

Mylopotas

This beach is for the younger tourist who wants to listen to music while relaxing on the golden sands. The music comes from the tavernas and you do not have any choice in the kinds of music on offer. The music doesn't stop at the end of the day, beach parties are also on the menu. The beach is organised with sun beds and umbrellas and just about every kind of water sport that's available.

Numerous bars and tavernas are on hand at this beach with all sorts of water sports. The resort is home to a number of camp sites that is favoured by the younger tourist.
