| Information :- Heraklion is the capital of Crete. The picture shows the Venetian fortress that was built around 1204 to fend off attacks by arab pirates. In 1204, the city was bought by theRepublic of Venice. The Venetians improved on the fortifications of the city by building enormous fortifications, most of which are still in place, including a giant wall, in places up to 40 m thick, with 7 bastions, and a fortress in the harbour. |
