About Formentera

Formentera is the smallest and most southerly island of the Balearic Islands group. It is 19 kilometres long and is located approximately 3 nautical miles (6 km) south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea.
The island can only be reached by ship, so relatively few tourists come to this location, making it a much quieter place than the other islands in the region. It is best known for the fact that nude sunbathing is allowed on most of its beaches.

Formentera comprises one municipality, also called Formentera, and has a population of 7,461 (2002). It is part of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, a fully integrated region of the kingdom of Spain.

The island's name is usually said to derive from the Latin word frumentum, meaning "grain." The island had been occupied by the Caertaginians before passing to the Romans. In succeeding centuries, it passed to the Visigoths, the Byzantines, the Vandals, and the Arabs. It was conquered by the Crown of Aragon and became part of the medieval Kingdom of Majorca..

To day Formentera is an enchanting island with great beaches and crystal clear water that must be some of the best in the mediteranean. The island is also known for its windsurfiing and sailing centres that cater for a wide range of abilities. It is only 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza town to la Savina, so many visitors come just for the day. The capital of the island is Sant Francesc Xavier but most visitors to the island tend to visit Es Pujols. The island generaly remains unspoilt by tourism even though the beaches are outstanding and amonst the best I have encountered.

The island climate is a typical mediteranean climate that is greatful for the cool breeze that seems to get up around mid day. The island is fairly flat with long flat white sand beaches on one hand and a rugged cliffs on the other.

Nudity is generally accepted on the island on most of the beaches except on the town beach Es Pujols. However, itis advised to cover up when using the restaurants or venturing off the beach.

Around the Island

Platja de Migjorn

Platja de MigjornPlatja de Migjorn is a long bay about 8 kilometres long with many small covesand secluded beaches with a pine forest behind the beach at one end. Between coves you will find rocky outcrops that are ideal for snorlkelling with great visibility. Along this stretch of beach are many bars and restaurants that offer a little shade and cool drinks.

Sa Roqueta

Sa Roqueta is situated between the more well known resorts of Es Pujols and Llevant. The cove is only small but is much favoured by the nudists.

Platja de Llevant

Platja de LievantPlatja de Llevant is situated on the east coast looking towards Ibiza and between Roqueta and Es Pujols. The dunes make this an area of outstanding beauty which is protected by the government as an area of outstanding interest. The dunes and small coves make this a favourite with the nudists. The long thin stretch of land does not offer a lot of protection from the sun so sun bathers should go prepared. On the opposite side of this strip of land you will find Illetes.

Es Caló

Es CaloThis resort has been developed from a small fishing village is a favourite with the Britsih tourists. Next to the harour is the small sandy cove, unfortunately it is quite near the main road. The area does boast some good quality restaurants but the area has become over developed.

Cala Saona

Cala SaonaThis area is absolutly beautiful, soft white sand and shallow clear waters surrounded by pine forests and rugged coast line that is ideal for snorkelling and sub aqua diving.

Playa d'es Pujols

Playa d'es PujolsPlaya d'es Pujils is one of Formenteras major resorts, it is particularly famous for its water sports and is ideal for families. Like all the beaches on Formentera the beach has soft white sand and beuatiful crystal clear water. The restaurants bars and cafes that line the beach and in the village come to life at night offering a good range of cuisine.

La Savina

La SavinaThis area is home to the salt lakes. The beach is situated between the harbour at La Savina and Es Pujols and offers a quite and relaxing holiday with many local beaches such as Roqueta, and Es Pujols if you want to venture further afield.

la Savina is formenteras only deep water harbour so all the boats from Ibiza or further afield arrive here whether its freight or tourists.

If your planning to stay on formentera for a day or even longer this is where you can hire cars, scooters or just bycles.
